2009 NBGSARA NIF PROJECT - Part 1 GIS Technology Upgrades

Workshop Name : "NIF laptops & Digital Mapping for GSAR "

Objectives (reasons) for course:
1. Ensure each NB-GSAR team has at least 2 members familiar on how to create a standardized digital maps for
GSAR operations.
2. Promote benefits of standardized digital mapping setup and utilization amongst all NB-GSAR teams.
3. Issue each team its quantity of 2 laptops, 1 scanner, 1 printer units purchased with NIF funding - upon successful completion.

Dates and location:
-Nov 21 2009 (Ramada Inn - Fredericton)

Each candidate must:
1. have successfully completed a SAR map and compass course and remain competent with those skills.
2. be familiar in the operation of Microsoft Windows
3. be competent in the operation of a GPS unit (Garmin 60cx or 76cx)
4. be available to assist with the production of digital maps with your GSAR team (for the next 12 months or longer).

NIF Laptops & Digital Mapping for GSAR

1000-10:15 -Laptop administraton (usage policy, warranty, support, shipping, data backup, updates)-K. Hong
1015-10:45 - Ozi Explorer: Overview (D.Millar)
10:45-11:15 - Ozi Explorer - Loading the map, confirming configuration, add grid lines, PLS & CP symbols
11:15-12:00 - Ozi Explorer -PLS utility, add distance rings, join tracks
12:00-1300 - Lunch (will be provided at Ramada Inn)
13:00-15:00 - Ozi Explorer - Waypoints: entering, saving, viewing and printing functions, download from GPS, managing tracks. Printing maps. Data backup strategy.
15:00-15:30-Delivery of hardware to each qualifying team  (sign contracts) G.Martin

- Overnight accommodations for Friday Nov 20 available only to those driving 3 hours (or more) from their residence.
- please read the attached expense claim policy for reimbursement information and amounts (*Fredericton residents exempted).

BUDGET AND EXPENSE CLAIM INFORMATION:
Resources for the Policies and Procedures component are identified in the NIF project documents.
Reimbursement for expenses will be provided according to the PNB Board of Management Travel Guidelines.

• Travel by personal vehicle - $0.39/km. Please carpool when possible.
• Meals allowance – BKFT - $7.00/ LNCH $9.50/DINER $17.50
• Accommodation – Actual rate within the authorized hotel list-Receipts required. Please call a hotel/motel directly to make your own reservations. One night of accommodation (Friday Nov 20) will be approved for those attendees who reside more that a 3 hour drive from Fredericton.
  Accomodation rates for Fredericton area in the month of Nov are not to exceed the amount of - $100.00 (tax extra)
  (Note only the original the invoice from the accommodation will be accepted with the expense claim, credit card statements are not accepted. Ask the accommodation for a paper invoice at the time of check out).
  
• Private accommodation - $25/night ( i.e. staying with friends or family)
• Incidentals - $5.00 per overnight stay.

Claims are to be made on the standard NBGSARA claim form and submitted to the Chair of the GIS Working Group (Glen Martin), who will review and authorize the expense and submit to the treasurer for payment on your behalf (do not submit directly to the treasurer as this will slow down the approval process).

- Please confirm the single room rate with the accommodation as rates may have changed. You are responsible for any amount that exceeds the limits identified above.

About :
Kenn Hong has been volunteering with GSAR since 1987. He is currently a Search Manager in the Fredericton region and technologies consultant to NBGSARA.

Duane Miller has been volunteering with GSAR since 2000. He is currently a Search Manager and Training Coordinator in the Moncton region. He has been creating digital maps for SAR operations since 2005.

Glen Martin has been volunteering with GSAR since 1998. He is currently a Search Manager in the Fredericton region and GIS data coordinator for NBGSARA. He has been creating digital maps for SAR operations since 2005.
